SRT board to nominate Yuthana as new chief

AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK

The board of the State Railway of Thailand yesterday resolved to nominate deputy SRT governor Yuthana Thapcharoen as the new governor, in line with a recent order from the Central Administrative Court. Mr Yuthana was selected as governor following the retirement of Chitsanti Dhanasobhon in 2006, but he was not appointed since his salary negotiations had not been finalised.

After the Sept 19, 2006 coup, his selection was dropped. He then complained to the Central Administrative Court, which ruled last Wednesday in his favour.

SRT board member and spokesman Suchatchawee Suwannasawat said that the board would not appeal against the court's order because it was rational and was in accordance with the findings of the Office of the Attorney-General and the Transport Ministry.

Mr Suchatchawee said the board will seek cabinet approval for Mr Yuthana's appointment as the new SRT governor within 30 days as the court ordered.

Transport Minister Santi Promphat said that the request for approval would not be submitted in time for the cabinet meeting today.

Yesterday, the SRT board also ordered the SRT to establish a subsidiary in order to develop its property commercially to boost its income and improve its own financial status.

The property development of the SRT, which owns a total of over 320 square kilometres of land nationwide, will be divided into stages. Its subsidiary will work out property development strategies, then survey property, create a development master plan and select potential property for development.

Yesterday, the board also gave the go-ahead for the SRT to improve several sections of railway tracks in the Northeast under two projects worth altogether about 18 billion baht.

AM Chana U-sathaporn, president of Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT), was confident he will pass a six-month evaluation by the AoT board on Thursday.

It was reported earlier that AM Chana was at odds with AoT chairman Vudhibhandu Vichairatana, especially on the approach to AoT's legal disputes with duty-free shop operator King Power International Group.
