Jockeying by factions delays aide postings

ANUCHA CHAROENPO and AEKARACH SATTABURUTH

Problems within the People Power party (PPP) have delayed its decision to pick aides to cabinet ministers under the party's quota system.

Sukhumpong: PPP is ‘just too big’

"Our party is big. It has 22 ministers and deputies who want the most capable people to help them. So we spend a lot of time considering them in order to put them in the right job," PPP deputy secretary-general and PM's Office Minister Sukhumpong Ngonkam said yesterday.

The PPP will select 70 MPs or members to help ministers and deputy ministers in the cabinet. So far, around half of them have been recruited by its executive board.

Only four coalition parties, Chart Thai, Pracharaj, Matchimathipataya and Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana, managed to submit their lists of assistants and secretaries to cabinet ministers to the cabinet for consideration and receive approval yesterday.

Mr Sukhumpong promised the PPP's list would be ready for the cabinet next week.

The other parties did not have the same problem as they had only a few ministers and deputies, he said.

A PPP source said most ministers and deputy ministers who served with former prime minister Samak Sundaravej and remained under the leadership of his successor Somchai Wongsawat did not change their aides.

The problem came from new faces as many factions, including those loyal to Newin Chidchob, wanted to be rewarded, the source said.

Mr Sukhumpong admitted factions within the party played a role in the selection of the aides.

The government yesterday could not settle on a team of spokespersons after Nahathai Thewphai-ngarm, also under the PPP quota, made a surprise decision to withdraw as a candidate.

Nattawut Saikua had been picked to be government spokesman with Miss Nahathai as one of his deputies.

But a PPP source said Miss Nahathai's change of heart came due to her decision to distance herself from Mr Nattawut as he is a member of the anti-coup United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship. The government could not appoint the team of spokespersons yesterday. But the source said the team will be officially announced next week during a cabinet meeting.
