Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening of ITU Telecom Asia 2008 on Monday morning before touring the exhibition area in the Challenger Hall 2 at Muang Thong Thani.

The exhibition and forum continues until Friday, with 179 companies represented in 15,000 square metres of exhibition space.

The four-day forum will see 110 seminars with 97 speakers from 25 countries while the exhibition is open to businessmen for the first three days. On Friday it will be open to the public, when a 200 baht admission fee will be charged.

Many exhibitors had demonstrations of the potential of 3G and WiMAX technologies while the NTC had a large exhibit entitled "Bridging the Future," highlighting its achievements and roles.

In conjunction with the event, the ITU released a United Nations report on Monday reviewing broadband penetration which showed that Asia now tops Internet usage and broadband access, with subscriber numbers growing almost five-fold in five years.
