CHATRUDEE THEPARAT
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has teamed up with Thai Airways International to help rehabilitate the tourism industry by jointly conducting promotion campaigns abroad and locally.
The two will use their branches and overseas offices worldwide to work together to create a better tourism climate following recent political conflicts.
The low points for the industry were the forced airport closures and the government declaring a state of emergency in Bangkok last month.
"The first priority of the two agencies is to restore the confidence of international tourists," said Phornsiri Manoharn, the TAT governor.
The campaign will include joint advertising on the Discovery and National Geographic TV channels and in international magazines in more than 20 languages. They are also planning advertising on buses, taxis and subways abroad.
The two agencies will also stage free trips to Thailand for 1,030 foreign travel agents and media representatives from Oct 8-13. As well, they plan roadshows in China, Europe, Eastern Europe and the United States.
THAI president Apinan Sumanaseni said the national carrier would offer discounts to foreign visitors who buy domestic air tickets between Oct 1 and March 31.
The airline this week has also reduced its fuel surcharges for all flights by as much as 30%, which could lead to more bookings, particularly from India, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Japan and South Korea.
