JONGSUTHANAMANEE FAMILY

Influential clan's assets seized

THEERAWAT KHAMTHITA

CHIANG RAI : The waning political clout of the influential Jongsuthanamanee clan was further eroded yesterday with the posting of an order from the bankruptcy court for the seizure of their assets.

Officials at the Legal Execution Department received an order from the Central Bankruptcy Court to seize the assets of four members of the family and their company Suthana Real Estate.

The order was posted at the Chiang Rai provincial court.

The court on May 28 declared the company and its operators bankrupt.

The order was the result of a lawsuit brought by Kiatnakin Bank, a company creditor, against Mongkol Jongsuthanamanee, Sakchai Jongsuthanamanee, Wanpen Jongsuthanamanee and Wanchai Jongsuthanamanee.

Amornpong Wichitakul, head of the Chiang Rai election committee, said the family members declared bankrupt had lost their right to run in any election as the law prohibits bankrupts standing for public office.

The Jongsuthanamanee clan were represented at all political levels in Chiang Rai province for 12 years. Their influence dwindled recently. They have lost all eight seats in the House of Representatives in Chiang Rai and executive seats in the Chiang Rai municipality to the People Power party (PPP).

The family had its people run in the Dec 23, 2007 general election under the Chart Thai party banner, but lost to PPP candidates. It is now represented only on the Chiang Rai provincial administration organisation.

Mr Wanchai, a former mayor, had planned to run in the general election for the Democrat party, a source said.
