COCKROACHES IN BUSES

Bug-in-ear spurs complaint

The Health Department has told operators of inter-provincial buses to clean up their act after a cockroach crept into a sleeping man's ear.

Department chief Sophon Mekthon warned the operators they are expected to provide more sanitary conditions for their passengers.

That includes more regular cleaning of vehicles, brushing of cushions, and washing blankets.

Dr Sophon advised passengers to take their own precautions on the buses by covering their heads with a hood or using earplugs.

Kittipong Khamdong, 23, lodged a complaint with police against a private bus operator for causing damage to his health.

Mr Kittipong told police he boarded Phuluang Tour Co's bus from Khon Kaen to Chiang Mai about 10pm on Monday.

He woke up in the middle of the night when a small cockroach started circling his left ear and suddenly crawled inside it.

He was frightened and felt pain in the ear as he tried in vain to get the bug out. When the bus stopped at Phitsanulok, he rushed to buy cotton buds to remove it. This time he succeeded. However, he suffered bleeding from the ear and tinnitus.

"This kind of thing can happen to any passenger. So I decided to file the police complaint to set a precedent so that bus operators are made responsible for passengers' safety," Mr Kittipong said.

He kept the dead cockroach and blood-soaked cotton buds to give to the police as evidence. "What would have happened if this was not a cockroach but a poisonous creature. The bus operator's negligence on cleanliness could become deadly," Mr Kittipong said.
