CHATRUDEE THEPARAT

Efforts are being stepped up to promote tourism in provinces close to core tourism destinations.

The goal is not only to promote new tourist spots but also generate more income for local people, according to Phornsiri Manoharn, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Currently, most of the country's tourism income is generated from provinces including Phuket, Krabi, Samui, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

Mrs Phornsiri said promotional activities in those provinces would focus on highlighting traditional culture, environmental preservation and the ways of life of local people.

The TAT has asked various organisations to promote package tours to the selected provinces. Participants include the Association of Domestic Travel (ADT), Thai Ecotourism & Adventure Travel Association, Thai Travel Agents Association and Thai Hotels Association.

As part of its promotional strategy for the second half, the TAT is planning 113 projects with 146 promotional activities to stimulate domestic tourism. They are expected to help Thai tourism generate 388.2 billion baht in revenue as projected, up 2% from 380.43 billion last year, she said.

Panadda Chanpanya, director of the TAT's Marketing Promotion Department for the northern region, also urged operators to explore the potential in Uttaradit, Phrae and Nan, three provinces rich in Lanna culture and attractions with potential for ecotourism.

Chaithawat Thaiyong, deputy president of the ADT, agreed that new tourism sites should be developed in order to attract tourists.
