INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD
Thai students have brought home gold medals from the International Biology Olympiad competition, for the third year running.
A team of four won three gold and one silver in the 19th edition of the annual competition, held this year in Mumbai, India.
High school students from 55 countries took part from July 13 to July 20, said Nari Wongsirotskul, the acting director of the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology, which organised the trip.
Tana Tongsrikam of the Suankularb Wittayalai school won a gold medal at the second attempt, having brought home a silver medal from last year's competition, held in Canada.
He encouraged other Thais to make full use of their knowledge and skills so they too can represent the kingdom in their own areas of expertise. "The most important thing is to do our duty [for our country]," said Tana.
Other gold medallists were Atiporn Terdyothin of the Srinakharinwirot demonstration school in Pathumwan and Chao Chalernkit of the Suankularb Wittayalai school in Phra Nakhon. They said they were well prepared.
Biology lecturer Poonpipob Kasemsap of Kasetsart University was assigned to oversee the students' intensive two-week preparation. He stressed that the competition requires a deeper knowledge of biology than a typical high school student would understand.
Silver medallist Pakawat Jongsatidkiat said other students could become academically renowned like his team if they do not view their studies as a burden.
"There are many new things to discover," he said.
