This may sound crazy, but I like the idea that people in the provinces abandon their cars and motorcycles and switch to horses to beat the current oil price hikes.
Mae Joh University in Chiang Mai has successfully promoted horse-riding among its students. Buddhist monks living in mountainous areas have been using horses as a means of transportation for a long time.
Bangkok may not be ready for this. It's not easy to train people to ride horses. And who will clean up the streets and pavement?
Chiang Mai University lecturer Nidhi Iewseewong has been promoting the use of bicycles, which are cheaper and more convenient than horses. They are also good exercise. The problem is city streets are not wide enough to add bicycle lanes.
The high price of oil may be a blessing in disguise. People are being forced to change their lifestyle. We must use less oil in order to survive.
Alternative energy sources will not last forever, so eventually we will have to abandon our cars and switch to bicycles, horses and buffalo. A new, peaceful world will emerge.
The idea might seem far-fetched, but it will help save our planet from pollution. Oil-producing countries and hedge fund investors will lose their power. Are political power-holders willing to accept the perception of a new global community?
