Mr. William S. Botwick - President and Managing Director

The world’s largest manufacturer of motor vehicles, General Motors was established in 1908. Since then the company has expanded to cover manufacturing bases in 30 countries worldwide. General Motors produced a combined total of 8.5 million commercial and passenger vehicles in 2001 (15% of the world’s vehicle market) with a total net income of US$1.5 billion.

Wholly owned by General Motors Corporation of the United States, General Motors Thailand was established in 1996 and started the manufacture of motor vehicles in May 2000 at its assembly centre in the Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate, Rayong Province. The company manufactures vehicles for export and domestic sale and distributes GM vehicles and parts in Thailand.

With an investment of 27 billion baht, The General Motors Thailand Assembly Center was established to manufacture GM and alliance vehicles for export and the domestic market under the names Chevrolet, Holden, Opel, Subaru and Vauxhall. For the years 2000–2003, the production will include Zafira MPV, Alfa Romeo 156 and the Isuzu one-tonne pick-up truck.

GM Thailand also operates a distribution office, service parts and training centre under the name Chevrolet Sales (Thailand) Ltd. GM’s products are sold in Thailand through the Chevrolet dealer network, with showroom and service facilities in Bangkok, the vicinity and all major cities in the country.

It is also the first and only manufacturer in Thailand to export passenger vehicles to Europe and Japan.

Outstanding achievements

After only three weeks of operation, GM Thailand received its ISO 9002 certification, followed by the ISO 14001 certification just seven months later. In April 2002, the company distinguished itself with a record 15 million man-hours without injury-related downtime, and was awarded the Prime Minister’s Industrial Safety Award and Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare Award in Safety in the year 2001. For its product quality, General Motors Thailand was awarded worldwide recognition, in addition to the Car of the Year for Best MPV by Thailand’s Grand Prix Magazine.
