Leicester poised for return to top flight

In similar fashion to the Premier League there is an intense three-way battle for the honours in the Championship although Leicester City look like a good bet for a speedy return to top flight action.

With only two automatic promotion places available, Leeds and Ipswich Town look to be fighting it out for second place. At the time of writing Ipswich are one point behind Leeds but with a game in hand, making it a very tight situation. The result of last night's fixture between Queens Park Rangers and Leeds is very important.

Until last weekend Southampton had been in the hunt but after being walloped 5-0 by Leicester on Tuesday night it looks like the Saints will have to settle for a play-off spot. Southampton manager Russell Martin was furious with his team's limp performance. "I want to apologise to the fans," he told the BBC. "We're going to need them in the next few games to pick the lads up."

The thumping victory by the Foxes indicates that the Thai-owned club have overcome a recent stumble when they lost two in a row. Leading the way for Leicester was Abdul Fatawu with a timely hat-trick. He also set up Jamie Vardy for the veteran striker's 18th goal of the season.

After the victory over Southampton happy Foxes manager Enzo Maresca commented: "We are nearly there. We just need one more win to finish the job." A win at Preston on Tuesday night would seal it for the Foxes although they could even clinch it this weekend if results go their way.

Down at the bottom there is an equally intense fight to avoid relegation. Although Rotherham United are already gone, there are still five clubs battling to avoid the drop. Sheffield Wednesday's surprise 3-1 win at Blackburn Rovers last week has given the Yorkshire club a lifeline. Owls fans believe the enthusiasm generated by manager Danny Rohl is the key to their survival. However they have two tough games coming up, at home to West Bromwich Albion today and away to Sunderland next week.

Birmingham City have dropped into the relegation zone two points above Huddersfield. The two teams meet at John Smith's Stadium today in a huge clash with both sides desperate for a win. Plymouth Argyle and Blackburn are also still vulnerable.

In League One, Portsmouth have already clinched promotion and are back in the Championship after 12 long seasons in Leagues One and Two. It is a huge relief for Pompey and boss John Mousinho who was crowned manager of the season for League One. Mousinho praised his backroom staff noting "You can't achieve anything on your own -- and I certainly couldn't."

Derby are favourites to join Pompey and only need a draw at home to bottom-placed Carlisle to clinch second place and automatic promotion with Bolton Wanderers likely heading for the play-offs.

League Two is just about done and dusted with Stockport County champions while Mansfield Town and Wrexham have also clinched promotion. Stockport manager Dave Challinor said after beating Accrington 4-2 that winning the title was "the best feeling ever, a real team effort."

Down at the bottom Forest Green Rovers have been relegated ending their seven-year excursion in the Football League which saw them reach League One for one season. Sutton United look likely to join them in the drop although Colchester United are not completely out of danger.
