PWA and DDPM Renew Pact to Combat Drought

MOU aims for sustainable solutions to drought crises.

The Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA), led by Chakapong Kamchan, Deputy Governor (Operation 2) and Acting Governor, along with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), Ministry of Interior, Thailand, led by Chaiwat Chuntirapong, Director-General of the DDPM, have jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the third consecutive year. This agreement aims to address drought-related issues and ensure the provision of raw water for public water supply services. The signing ceremony occurred on 27 March 2024, at the PWA headquarters in Laksi District, Bangkok. Chakapong Kamchan highlighted PWA's dedication to providing clean and safe tap water that meets public consumption standards and its preparedness to effectively manage drought crises. The PWA actively monitors water situations and anticipates shortages, particularly at Branch 234.

Chakapong mentioned PWA's collaboration with DDPM under the MOU to prepare water reserves for clean water production and bridge drought and rainy season gaps across the country. Furthermore, PWA supports the DDPM with budget, machinery, equipment, and convenience for officers working nationwide, ensuring adequate clean water supply during dry seasons for the public's maximum benefit.

This ongoing cooperation between PWA and DDPM, starting since 2022, marks its third year with the ceremony on 27 March 2024, at the PWA headquarters in Laksi District, Bangkok.

He also urged the public to use water wisely, value its importance, and prepare water reserves for drought or emergencies. Regular inspection of piping systems and fixtures to prevent leaks and reduce water waste is encouraged, with leaks reportable to local PWA branches or the PWA Contact Centre at 1662, available 24/7.

Chaiwat Chuntirapong, Director-General of the DDPM, emphasised drought as a significant natural disaster exacerbating due to climate change. The Cabinet approved nine drought support measures for the fiscal years 2023/2024, aligned with the National Disaster Management Policy focusing on prevention, impact reduction, and preparedness. As the central agency for disaster prevention and mitigation, the DDPM coordinates agency cooperation for effective risk management and sustainable drought mitigation efforts.

DDPM's collaboration with PWA enhances understanding and cooperation in addressing drought issues, preparing water sources, and increasing capital for clean water production to meet the population's needs sustainably. Chaiwat stressed the collective efforts towards "Awareness - Adaptation - Swift Recovery - Sustainable," with DDPM ready to support disaster relief efforts in coordination with PWA's operational strategies to mitigate public suffering from drought conditions.
